January is always a time for positive change, but the senior-level candidate market really starts to get active once it ends.
Voice of Verve insight by Simon Rutten | Verve Executive Search Specialist
While January typically marks the start of positive change, February takes the lead in the senior job market, says our executive specialist Simon Rutten. As people reassess their current situations, new opportunities arise for businesses and career growth.
If the Christmas break had you re-evaluating your career and thinking about a change, you’re in good company.
Taking time off, resetting and spending time with friends and family reminds us of what really matters. It motivates us to reassess our priorities and explore new opportunities.
I see this trend every year, from late January into February, within my executive network. Candidates express that while they value their C-suite, management or executive roles, they want more balance and better alignment.
Relocating from Sydney to a more relaxed market and great lifestyle offering like Newcastle and the Hunter holds significant appeal, especially with our region’s diverse and high-quality employers.
Increase in discreet market activity
At this time of year, we don’t necessarily see an immediate surge in roles available, but increased market activity due to heightened candidate engagement.
Many professionals at a senior level are cautious about openly applying for roles such as those listed on platforms like Seek. Instead, they prefer to leverage their professional networks, including connections and recruiters, for discretion.
This is where our role becomes critical: understanding candidates’ expectations, maintaining a relationship of trust and bringing them to market with confidence.
In essence, the transition phase for candidates in this market is about deliberate, strategic moves rather than broad applications. It’s about knowing what they want and finding the right opportunity in a trusted and supportive way.
Sought after senior-level skills
Now and into 2025, there’s a specific range of skills companies are seeking.
These include digital transformation leadership, including AI, the ability to foster cohesive remote and hybrid work cultures, and soft skills such as emotional intelligence, adaptability, resilience and navigating complexity.
They also include sector-specific knowledge, which in the Hunter includes mining, healthcare and renewable energy. Plus, diversity and inclusion is a priority.
What C-suite candidates want
For those senior-level candidates seeking new opportunities, lifestyle and work-life balance really is key in decision-making.
In addition to this, they’re looking for purpose-driven opportunities that align with a business’ mission and values and have clear goals for meaningful change. They also want a role that aligns with their personal values.
A desire for leadership challenge and autonomy is also something I’m seeing. People want the opportunity to innovate, drive impactful decision-making and create a progressive culture.
Last but not least, they want growth and development. This includes the opportunity to act as a mentor to others.
As well as giving you some insight into the market, the takeaway from this is to leverage the opportunity that February presents, whether you’re a candidate or a company. As local specialists in executive search, the Verve team and I are here to assist you.
