Voice of Verve insight by Stephanie Airlie | Verve Construction Specialist
Here at Verve, we’re all about hiring for culture. But figuring out whether a construction candidate is the right fit isn’t always easy. Our construction specialist, Stephanie Airlie, is here to help you nail it with interview questions that dig deep.
If a candidate doesn’t align with your company and site culture, they won’t stick around. It’s not just about getting along. It’s about shared values, work ethic and mindset.
In construction, where teamwork, safety and adaptability are critical, hiring people who really ‘get it’ can make or break a project.
So, how do you spot the right fit? These 10 interview questions will help you figure out who’ll not just fit in but add to your culture in all the right ways.
1. “Tell me about a time you worked on a project where the team faced unexpected delays. How did you contribute to keeping morale and progress on track?”
Why it works: Reveals how the candidate handles setbacks, supports their team, and stays proactive under pressure.
2. “In our company, safety is more than just compliance. It’s part of our culture. How do you personally make safety a part of your everyday work?”
Why it works: Shows whether they take safety seriously and live it day to day, not just tick boxes.
3. “Describe how you handle conflict on-site, whether between trades, subcontractors, or team members.”
Why it works: Tests emotional intelligence, communication, and problem-solving in high-stress settings.
4. “We value proactive communication. Can you share a time you raised a concern early and it helped the project or team?”
Why it works: Looks for transparency and responsibility in project execution.
5. “What does a positive site culture look like to you, and how do you contribute to it?”
Why it works: Taps into their view of a healthy work environment and whether they’re a team player.
6. “How do you approach working with a diverse group of people: different roles, backgrounds, and experience levels?”
Why it works: Helps you see if they’re respectful, adaptable, and open-minded on a mixed crew.
7. “We expect our team to support apprentices and newer workers. Tell me about a time you mentored or helped a junior team member.”
Why it works: Reveals leadership, patience, and willingness to develop others.
8. “Can you describe a time you had to adjust quickly to a last-minute change on a job site? How did you keep the team aligned?”
Why it works: Shows you how adaptable they are and how they communicate under pressure.
9. “Which one of our company values do you most align with?
Why it works: Checks whether they get what your culture’s about—and if they’re a good fit.
10. “Why do you want to work for our company specifically, and what do you think you’ll bring to our culture?”
Why it works: Shows if they’ve done their homework and really want to be part of what you’re building.
