Work in construction or hire for a construction company? Our construction specialists, Clare Ferguson and Stephanie Airlie, are here to help you lay the foundations for better hiring—and getting hired—in their new short video series, Nailed It.

Construction is a major industry here in the Hunter. But like many sectors, companies are feeling the pressure of skills shortages, strong competition for talent, and changing perceptions of the industry.

For candidates, breaking into the industry or finding the right role can also be challenging, whether it’s due to high competition, limited experience or simply securing the right fit.

That’s why Clare and Steph have launched Nailed It. A short, practical recruitment video series designed to give employers and job seekers the construction insights they need to succeed.

Exclusive to Voice of Verve subscribers

The series is currently exclusive to our Voice of Verve subscribers—our LinkedIn newsletter that delivers the latest recruitment insights straight from our specialists. If you haven’t signed up yet, now’s the time!

Every two weeks, we’ll release a new short video (just 4–5 minutes) packed with practical tips, real-world advice and industry know-how.

It’s quick, it’s actionable and it’s designed to help you nail your next move, whether you’re hiring or job hunting. The first two episodes have already gone live.

Episode 1 – How to get your construction CV right

Aimed at candidates, this episode dives into getting your construction resume just right. Clare and Steph covered some of the most common challenges people face when putting their resumes together.

They tackled questions like whether or not you should include a photo and the ideal order for sections—really getting into the nitty-gritty.

They shared insights on how to highlight your key achievements at the top (with real examples), the best way to present past career info, how to showcase the projects you’ve worked on (including dollar values), and the importance of outlining your career aspirations.

Episode 2 – Hiring for culture

In the second episode, aimed at employers, Clare and Steph get real about what it means to hire for culture, not just capability.

The starting point is defining your company culture. Truly understanding what you stand for, what you believe in, and how your people behave day in and day out. The next step is asking the right questions during interviews and knowing what a great answer looks like.

Questions they talk through include ‘Tell me about a mistake you made on-site’ and ‘Tell us about a time you had the opportunity to show initiative around process improvement’. Hint: having great ideas equals value add.

They also talked about really considering the vibe of a person, how interviews are a bit like dating, and involving other team members in second interviews. Plus, they shared the importance of being transparent about what working in your business is really like.
